This is an amazing article and a great website, but I was just wondering I planned on selling my own designs and trying to get clients that I could design for and print. Is that a bad idea? Should I just focus on one or the other? I never thought about the idea of just focusing on a brand before. Any advice on this would help me out, I'm glad I found this article before I bought a press.

who does your printing I am looking for a really good printer but it is crazy hard to find one you got any suggestions?

This was a very informing post, thank you. However, i find it discouraging because i purchased a cmyk press earlier this year and have recently decided to start my own company with intention of printing everything on my own. It seems from your first hand experience, its a bad idea.

I think too many people think screen printing won't be that difficult and this is just a warning from someone who has been there.

I think there are great costs of time and money associated with doing the screen printing yourself.

100% agree. i'd always wanted to start my own clothing line but thought i'd learn to print myself to save money. i took a screenprinting class at my college…i had 24 hr access to all the equipment so i didn't waste any money on that (which would have been super expensive) but i sure wasted my time! screenprinting, while not truly a difficult process can be time-consuming and SUPER messy with lots of room for error.

now i get shirts professionally printed. its seems more expensive but it saves me time, and also money cause when i was doing it myself i made alot of mistakes and ended up having to throw a bunch of inventory away.

Hey thanks for the website! Me and some college friends have been sketching up some shirts, problem is we cant find a manufacturer that sells shirts with a varying color scheme on the pocket and collar, unless we buy 5000 shirts. Is there any place where we could get 50-100 shirts to test our product before we get into buying thousands of dollars of shirts. Any advice would be awesome!

You just need to have some trust. I am sure there are very few printers that would jeopardize their business by doing something like that.
