QuestionsCategory: legalWhat are the legal implications for interpretations of fictional characters?
Anonymous asked 5 years ago

I’ve been producing hand painted canvases for some time of my own take on pop cluture characters (superheros and other fictional characters).  I’m looking to develop these into T-shirt designs but am looking for guidance on the legal implications of this.  I know I can’t reproduce logos or photos of famous people but where do I stand with my own illustration of Superman for example?

It’s the same thing. Someone has the rights to all these characters.
The one way around it is parody. There are a lot of shirts on thread-less with famous characters on them and this is because the shirts are considered parody.
