It doesn’t matter how many friends or followers you have on social networking sites!

I think everyone has done it. Got some tool where they can send out hundreds of friend invites. It just isn’t worth the time you put into it. Most of the people that will accept your invite will be the kind of people that accept everyones invite and don’t even care about what your doing.

If you had 100 friends (or is it likes…) on Facebook that responded to every comment you put up that would be way better then having 1,000′s of friends with little to no interaction.

Social networking sites are about building a community. You need to figure out what your community wants to hear and deliver it in a personal way. No one wants to read facebook updates that sound like they are coming from some business. So be person and most importantly be entertaining.

This is also one of those areas you can hire someone else to do it. There might be a fan or friend that will do it for a few shirts.

I am literally catching up on all your old posts, and before I got to this article, I was looking at our facebook, twitter, and myspace. I was thinking about how i could increase the amount of people o the site with a program like that (we all have our moments of weakness). Anyways great article, feels like a kick in the butt.

I totally agree! I'm not so sure how much networking sites help, unless your company already has a large fan base. For those, like myself, who are just starting to build their company it's hard getting people to click on your blog/site without becoming annoying and robotic. I think good ol' “real life” is the way to go. You need to get out there and go to shows or events and let people see your stuff in person!

One thing you may want to add is to be consistent. It's one thing to engage with the masses. It's another to keep them coming back for me.

    I really enjoy this website.

Yeah starting up I was adding just about everyone I know and pretty much all I feel that does is maybe make it look more legit when people see a large number of followers. At the end of the day it doesn't really mean they are going to pay much attention unless you find other ways to capture their attention.

Growth has to be natural because people know when it is artificial and forced.

I fell prey to this when doing my freelance work. I just discovered twitter, so I read all the marketing tips they suggested to get followers and help business. I started following everyone I could in each related category, and then posted (usually random crap) several times a day.

It was a ton of work for no reward, actually I think it may have hurt my business instead of help. But I have learned better… yes I have learned better.
